Seit über 25 Jahren kehrt Simon Nabatov immer wieder zu einem der Hauptthemen seiner Arbeit zurück: dem Komponieren und Realisieren von Projekten, die mit Literatur verknüpft sind, sei es rein instrumental oder mit gesungenen bzw. gesprochenen Texten.
Die Kammeroper Sylvia zu schreiben war der nächste logische Schritt: eine Komposition mit Libretto, durchgehender Handlung, definierten Charakteren, sich immer weiterentwickelnder Dramaturgie und szenischen Elementen.
Bei der Suche nach dem Literaturstoff fiel Nabatovs Wahl auf die Geschichte die ihn schon seit Jahren interessiert und fasziniert hat: die Beziehung zwischen den genialen Dichter*innen Sylvia Plath und Ted Hughes, die eine magisch-starke Leidenschaft und immenses Talent teilten und gleichzeitig sich gegenseitig seelisch gequält haben, bis Sylvia Plath sich das Leben nahm.

Die Musik wird von einem hochkarätigen Kammermusikensembles erzählt, ergänzt durch Live-Elektronik und Videoprojektion. Die zwei Sänger*in übernehmen zusätzlich die Rollen von Sylvias Mutter, Vater und Sylvias Haupt-Rivalin Assia Wevill.
Neben den tragischen Aspekten, möchte Nabatov auch die Kreativität und das bleibende Erbe zweier außergewöhnlicher Autoren zelebrieren, die einen unauslöschlichen Eindruck in der Literaturwelt hinterlassen haben.

For over 25 years, Simon Nabatov has repeatedly returned to one of the main themes of his work: composing and realizing projects linked to literature, whether purely instrumental or with sung or spoken texts.
Writing the chamber opera Sylvia was the next logical step: a composition with a libretto, a continuous plot, defined characters, an evolving dramaturgy, and scenic elements.
In his search for literary material, Nabatov chose a story that had interested and fascinated him for years: the relationship between the brilliant poets Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes, who shared a magically powerful passion and immense talent, but at the same time tormented each other emotionally until Sylvia Plath took her own life.
The music is performed by a top-class chamber music ensemble, complemented by live electronics and video projection. The two singers also take on the roles of Sylvia’s mother, father, and Sylvia’s main rival, Assia Wevill.
Beyond the tragic aspects, Nabatov also wants to celebrate the creativity and lasting legacy of two extraordinary authors who left an indelible mark on the literary world.
